Well we survived! Here is how our night went down:
About 9 PM last night we started getting calls and texts from people in our ward that there was a Tsunami watch due to the 8.8 earthquake in Japan, and said to go and stock up on water, gas and food. We did just that and it was crazy! The lines were crazy long! While Rick was in Foodland waiting in line, that is when the watch turned into a warning signaled by the Tsunami sirens. They are super loud and eerie sounding! I was at home at the time and the fire station down the street from us was using megaphones to tell us all to pack up and go to a safe zone. When Rick got home we started packing up our valuables and putting things up high in our house. We were lucky to have good friends in our ward that live on the second floor of TVA that offered for us to come stay with them since our house was in a danger zone. So we drove away from our little neighborhood not knowing what to expect. We decided to call our parents because on the news they had informed everyone that people with at&t had lost service, so we quickly called. My poor parents I don't think they got a wink of sleep!
The first wave was announced to hit Hawaii around 3 AM. We sat around until about 1 just talking and listening to the news and sirens. We got a little sleep until about 4 am when everyone from the mainland started finding out about the Tsunami warning and started calling and texting us. We felt so grateful to receive so much love and concern. The warning turned into an advisory around 7 am and so we felt it was safe to go home. I am so happy we had somewhere to stay... though our house didn't flood there is sand on the streets from 6 foot waves and the river behind our house is high.... I am sure we would have been pretty scared. We are happy that it was not anything horrible, and are keeping those in Japan in our prayers. There are a lot of students here that have still not heard anything from their families.
As Rick and I started to unpack and clean the house post tsunami we started laughing in under 6 months we have "survived" Two dangerous situations.... Rick said we should make a t-shirt that says " I survived the great blizzard of Utah '10 and Tsunami of Hawaii '11" haha
Love you all and Aloha!
so glad your house made it safe and sound along with you two!
ReplyDeleteand tell rick never to say stuff like that... doesn't he know he just asked for some crazy natural disaster to hit him in 2012?
say your prayers... :)
